Developmental
Democracy in Africa: Theory and Feasibility |
The theme selected for the
2002 inaugural session of the Annual Social Science Campus, is: Developmental
Democracy in Africa: Theory and Feasibility. The choice of this
theme is borne out by a desire to advance theoretical reflection on the
crises of maladjustment and democracy in Africa and, in so doing,
explore the feasibility of the revival of a project on developmentalism
in Africa within a political framework that is democratic by definition
and in practice. This area has been given prominence by the
developmental stalemate of the IMF/World Bank structural adjustment
years, the continuing difficulties associated with Africa’s mode of
integration into African structures and processes globalisation, and the
stymieing of democratic potentialities of African peoples. Current
discussions around this question in the African academy connect back to
the earlier questions posed at independence: What kind of development
and what kind of democracy are best suited to Africa ?
