Editorial Note:
This Information Bulletin is an
innovation which has been adopted by CODESRIA to keep all members of the
African social research community informed of every aspect, and the
different stages of the Council’s preparation for the upcoming General
Assembly scheduled for 10 – 12 December, 2002 in Kampala. In doing so,
the Bulletin is also designed to serve as a mobilisation tool as
the countdown begins in earnest to an event which promises to be the
biggest gathering of scholars on the African continent this year and a
true festival of ideas and debate. As frequently as the need arises, the
CODESRIA Secretariat will issue this Information Bulletin right
up to the first week of December 2002. It is hoped that you will find
the Bulletin informative and useful.
From the Executive
Secretary: Detailed Breakdown of the Abstracts and Panel Proposals
Received in Respect of the 10th General Assembly
Date: 15 November,
2002
Ref.: BSE//237/2002
Dear colleagues and friends,
Further to the information reported in the
Information Bulletin No. 4 regarding the impressive response
received from the African and wider international scholarly community to
the call for papers for the upcoming 10th General Assembly,
we are pleased to present an analysis of the geographical distribution
of the abstracts received. Some 426 abstracts and panel proposals were
received as of the deadline of 31st August, 2002 that was
set. 50 other abstracts and panel proposals were received after the
deadline. 120 abstracts, including proposals for panels, were selected
by the CODESRIA Scientific Committee which was requested by the
Executive Committee to serve as the body to evaluate and identify the
papers to be presented during the scientific sessions of the Assembly.
The 120 papers selected have been organised by the Secretariat into 20
parallel panels and a number of plenary sessions spread over a period of
three days. The fourth day of the Assembly is reserved exclusively for
institutional governance issues.
Below is a detailed breakdown by country,
region and continent of the abstracts received for consideration for the
10th General Assembly:
