• Article by the late Prof. Chachage on the University as a Site for Basic Knowledge

The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) is pleased to announce its new Executive Committee which was elected at the 11^th General Assembly which took place in Maputo from 06 – 10 December, 2005. The Committee is composed as follows: 

Teresa Cruz e Silva is Mozambican and current President of the Executive Committee of CODESRIA, following her election to this position at the 11th General Assembly, held in Maputo in December 2005. She holds a PhD in social sciences from the University of Bradford, UK. She is currently Associate Professor at the African Studies Centre and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo, Mozambique, which she has served in several other capacities including as dean, and director. Her other institutional memberships and affiliations include: Associate Researcher with WLSA (Women and Law in Southern Africa); Member of board of experts at Samora Machel Documentation Centre, Maputo; Affiliation to the African Association for the Study of Religions, the African Studies Centre, Porto University, Portugal, and the Social Studies Centre, Coimbra University, Portugal. She has served on the boards of several scholarly journals including: ETNOGRÁFICA; Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais; AFRICANA, Africa Development, and Africa Y Medio Oriente. She has published extensively on Mozambique and Southern Africa, and her most recent edited book is titled ‘Lusofonia’ em África: História, Democracia e Integração Africana (CODESRIA, 2005). Dr Cruz e Silva’s current research interests are contemporary Social History in Mozambique and Southern Africa; liberation movements and nationalism; social networks, religion and society; youth, identities and HIV/AIDS; regional and national peace and security studies.

Georges Kobou est de nationalité Camerounaise. Il est Vice-président du CODESRIA depuis décembre 2005. Il a également servi comme membre du comité exécutif de 2002 à 2005. Outre son Doctorat Unique en Econométrie de l’Université de Paris X-Nanterre, France, obtenu depuis Septembre 1988, il possède une Agrégation en Sciences Economiques, depuis Novembre 2003. Il a enseigné dans des universités françaises et camerounaises dont celles de Douala et de Yaoundé II. Il est actuellement : Chef du Département des Techniques Quantitatives à la Faculté des Sciences Economiques et de Gestion de l’Université de Yaoundé II, depuis novembre 2005 et Doyen de la Faculté des Sciences Economiques et de Gestion de l’Université de Yaoundé II, depuis septembre 2005. Kobou est également Coordonnateur du Comité ad hoc chargé de l’élaboration des termes de référence sur l’évaluation de l’enseignement supérieur au Cameroun, en juin 2005, et Professeur associé au programme collaboratif CREA-Université de Yaoundé II (programme du PhD), depuis 2003. Il est Membre associé du Laboratoire d’Economie Appliquée (LEA) de l’université Omar Bongo, à Libreville, au Gabon, depuis 1999. Depuis septembre 2002, il est Membre du Comité de Rédaction de la Revue Afrique et Développement du CODESRIA. Kobou est membre du Comité d’Organisation des Consultations Régionales sur "le Développement Rural et la Réduction de la Pauvreté en Afrique Centrale et en Afrique de l’Ouest", comité conjointement mis en place par la Banque Mondiale et le CODESRIA, en Mars-Mai, 2001. Il a publié des livres et des articles sur plusieurs aspects de l’économie et de la gestion. Parmi ses plus récents livres : Les économies Réelles en Afrique. Ses thèmes de recherche en cours sont: la Croissance Economique, l’Economie de l’Environnement et l’Economie du travail

Abouhani Abdelghani enseigne l'urbanisme et la science politique à l'Université Mohamed V de Rabat au Maroc Il a été longtemps impliqué dans plusieurs réseaux importants de recherches du Conseil pour le Développement de la Recherche en Sciences Sociales en Afrique, et fut membre du comité exécutif de 1995 à 2003. Ses principales publications sont les suivantes : Pouvoirs villes et notabilités urbaines au Maroc : quand les notables font les villes, URBAMA 2000; Enjeux et acteurs de la gestion urbaine : redistribution des pouvoirs dans les villes marocaines CODESRIA, 2002, et Pouvoirs locaux et municipalités dans le monde arabe,  l'Harmattan, 2004

‘Jìmí Adésínà is Professor of Sociology at Rhodes University in South Africa. He is the President of the South African Sociological Association, Co-Chair of the Social Science Network of South Africa, and was elected to the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) in 2005. He received his education from the University of Ibadan (Nigeria) and University of Warwick (UK). He taught at the University of Ibadan from 1983 to 2000. For several years he was active in the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU), and served as the Chair of the University of Ibadan branch, and member of its National Executive Council. At various times he held visiting positions at the University of Lagos (Nigeria), University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa), JASPA-ILO/UNECA (Addis Ababa), and the UN Research Institute for Social Development (Geneva); University of Ulster (Magee College) in Northern Ireland. His research and teaching interests are in the areas of the political economy of Africa’s Development, Social Theory, Labour Studies, and Social Policy. He coordinated the Africa-region research on “Social Policy in a Development Context” (2003-2005) for the UN Research Institute for Social Development. He is currently researching the intellectual biographies and the canonical works of Professors Bernard Magubane and Archie Mafeje under the programme Exile, Endogeneity, and Sociology in South Africa. Among his published works are Labour in the explanation of an African Studies (CODESRIA, 1994), Currents and Perspectives in Sociology (co-editor, Malthouse, 2001), and African Development Challenges in the New Millennium (co-editor, Zed Books 2006).

Nouria Benghabrit-Remaoun est Sociologue, enseignante-chercheur et membre du comité exécutif du CODESRIA. Elle dirige actuellement le centre national de recherche en anthropologie sociale et culturelle (CRASC). Dr BENGHABRIT-REMAOUN est membre de plusieurs organisations et associations scientifiques, incluant : le comité éditorial consultatif de la Revue Africa Development du Codesria ; le comité mondial du Forum de l’Unesco pour l’enseignement supérieur, la recherche et la connaissance ; le comité arabe du Forum de l’Unesco pour l’enseignement supérieur, la recherche et la connaissance; le comité de rédaction de la Revue Prologues (Revue Maghrébine du Livre) ; conseil associatif de l’AUF (Agence universitaire de la  francophonie). Elle a dirigé plusieurs projets de recherche suivie de publications sur le préscolaire, les femmes, les jeunes notamment : Le préscolaire en Algérie. Chachage S.L. Chachage unfortunately passed away on July 9th 2006. He was Professor and head of department of Sociology at the University of Dar es Salaam, where he had served as Associate Dean (Research and Publications). Professor Chachage had also taught at the University of Cape Town, held many positions of distinction and served on the editorial boards of several journals. CODESRIA was also privileged to have him as chair of its Scientific Committee from 1995-2001. Chachage published extensively on sociology, and was a renowned Swahili language novelist. His latest publications include : Globalisation and Social Policy in Africa, which he co-edited with Tade Akin Aina and Elizabeth Annan-Yao (CODESRIA, 2004) ; “Intellectuals and Africa's Renewal” In: East Africa: In Search of National and Regional Renewal, edited by Felicia Arudo Yieke (CODESRIA, 2005); a special issue of Africa Development on Citizenship in Africa (Vol.28, Nos.1&2, 2003), which he guest-edited; “Nyerere: nationalism and post-colonial developmentalism” In: African Sociological Review (Volume 8, Number 2, 2004); “Higher Education Transformation and Academic Exterminism”, In: CODESRIA Bulletin, (N°. 1&2, 2001); and “The World Social Forum: Lessons from Mumbai”, In: CODESRIA Bulletin, (No. 3&4, 2004). His research interests were broad and his scholarship creative. At conferences and seminars he drew richly from a repertoire of anecdotes with a sense of humour unequalled, to drive his message home.

Kimba Idrissa est professeur titulaire à l’Université Abdou Moumouni de Niamey, Niger. Il a été professeur associé dans plusieurs universités et centres de recherches en Afrique, en France, aux Pays-Bas et aux Etats-Unis. On lui doit plusieurs publications sur l’histoire politique et sociale du Niger contemporain. Il a dirigé un ouvrage collectif intitulé Le Niger : État et démocratie, (L’Harmattan, 2001).

Godwin R. Murunga is a lecturer in history at Kenyatta University, Nairobi. He is currently completing graduate studies in history at Northwestern University, Evanston, USA. Murunga has been associated with CODESRIA since 1996 when he attended the CODESRIA Governance Institute. He is a recipient of the CODESRIA Small Grant for Thesis Writing (1995) and a laureate of the CODESRIA African Humanities Institute (1999). His articles have appeared in Journal of Third World Studies, Ufahamu, African Sociological Review, Journal of Contemporary African Studies and Africa Development. He is co-editor with Shadrack W. Nasong’o of the book Kenya: The Struggle for Democracy (forthcoming).

Rashidi Noël Obotela, Docteur en Philosophie et Lettres (Groupe Histoire), est professeur au Département des Sciences Historiques à l’université de Kinshasa, en République Démocratique du Congo. Il est également chercheur au Centre d'Etudes Politiques de l’université de Kinshasa en République Démocratique du Congo. Ses domaines de recherche incluent l’histoire de la population; l’étude des endémies à l'est du Congo; les conflits dans la Région des Grands Lacs (particulièrement l'étude des dérives identitaires).

Onalenna Doo Selolwane, is a senior lecturer in the department of Sociology, University of Botswana, where she teaches Sociology and Development Studies, and which she has served in several capacities, including as Head of Department and Chair of Committees. She graduated with a PhD from the School of the Development Studies at the University of East Anglia in 1992. She is on the editorial board of several journals, including the African Sociological Review. She has published in the areas of gender, democracy and politics as well as civil society, ethnic relations and public governance. Her latest publications include “Botswana: Ethnic Structure and Public Sector Governance” In Yusuf Bangura (ed) Ethnicity, Inequality and Governance (Palgrave Macmillan, 2006); “From Infrastructural Development to Privatization: The Challenges of Employment Creation and Poverty Reduction in Gaborone”.
