Lecture Tour on Gender and Democracy

 Senegal, Mali and Nigeria, October-November 2003

CODESRIA and SEPHIS are jointly organizing a lecture tour on Gender and Democracy to be spread over a three-week period in October and November 2003. The aim of the programme is to establish connections between different research traditions and networks in the South. Through the programme, research institutes and universities in the South are supported to invite established scholars, representing a specific social/historical school or scholarly approach, from another part of the South to give a number of lectures in their region.

The 2003 lecture tour is meant to contribute to the South-South debate on the theme of Gender and Democracy. The scholar who is selected as the lecturer is expected to give seminars and public lectures on this particular theme in several countries. For 2003, the countries which have been selected are Senegal, Mali and Nigeria. Through the seminars, a first meeting is held between researchers and the lecturer in a restricted academic setting that permits for serious scholarly exchanges. The public lectures, which are usually advertised in the local press, are open to a wider audience made up of specialists and non-specialists.

Eligibility

Eligibility for selection as the lecturer is open to scholars working in Southern universities or research institutes (more especially scholars coming from Latin America, the Caribbean and  South Asia). It is expected that once selected, the lecturer will:

  • Be available for approximately three weeks to tour and give lectures in the three countries mentioned above;

  • Produce a relevant and original paper, with a strong social/historical dimension, which can be published in the CODESRIA/SEPHIS series.

  • Send the text of the lecture to CODESRIA at least three months before the actual tour starts.

  • Meet with colleagues and research students, advise on academic programmes, and explore the possibilities for collaborative research.

Following the tour, the lecturer is expected to become an active member of the CODESRIA/SEPHIS network and will be encouraged to help forge strong South-South cooperative links by, inter alia, assisting with the organization of a lecture tour of her/his country/region  by an African researcher.

CODESRIA/SEPHIS will cover the travel costs of the lecturer and provide her/him with a daily per diem during the period of her/his tour of the African continent.
