Sub- Saharan
Africa’s population is ageing. However, older people’s lives
in the region are characterised by a weakening adequacy of
customary family support systems, vulnerability to poverty and
exclusion from health services. At the same time, older people
make critical contributions to the welfare of the younger
generations in their families and communities – most
prominently as cares of children or grandchildren.
African
Research on Ageing Network (AFRAN) is mainly concerned with
strengthening and developing the still not so strong African
research capacity on ageing, health, HIV/AIDS and the family
by conducting collaborative, high quality research In doing
this, AFRAN aims at pursuing an integrated programme of
activities, comprising research and policy dialogues, capacity
building, training and curriculum development, web-based
information sharing and exchange and production of
publications.
