Looking at the context of decentralisation and local state
reform in Guinea Bissau this project aims at understanding the
structure and functioning of traditional power among the Bijagos.
While the institutions of the local state are weak in rural
Guinea Bissau, traditional authorities have always enjoyed
popular support and have bean key figures in the performance of
rituals and solving disputes at the local level. An in-depth
study of the institution of traditional authority using the
ethnographic method will improve our understanding of
institution of traditional authority in order to articulate
their activities with those of the modern state.
