Representations of disease and
healing practices: A look at Handa therapeutic practices and
pharmacopoeia
Coordinator:

Country
Angola
This is an
ethnographic study of disease and healing representations and
practices in Southern Angola. Drawing on sociological and
anthropological approaches to disease and healing the project
explores local power relations, the articulation between
“traditional” and “western” medicine and the relationship
between food and disease among the Handa. The materials
resulting from the study will provide a comparative basis in
relation to other African experiences and will also improve our
knowledge about one of the less studied regions in Angola.
