The late Archie Mafeje was one of the leading social scientists, intellectuals and scholars in Africa and the world. His formal academic training in the natural and social sciences enabled him to develop and propel comprehensive and expansive knowledge on diverse thematic areas and disciplines, especially on Africa’s development, social theory and Pan-Africanism. He has bequeathed the social sciences with a lasting legacy of erudition and excellent articulation in research and knowledge production, commitment to constructive transformation of the knowledge terrain especially considerate/attentive to Africa’s past, present and future. The Archie Mafeje Research Institute is established to provide epistemic platforms for interrogating pertinent challenges to the vision of a better life for Africans that the late Professor Mafeje was associated with. The institute aims at generating knowledge on Africa which will inform effectual social policy interventions.
