Since 2004, 15 research centers have been mobilized to carry out research together.
Set up in July 2004 by a group of universities, research centres and non-governmental organisations, the Consortium for Development Partnerships is an international consortium of institutions devoted to conducting collaborative research and capacity-building activities in West Africa. The resulting Consortium for Development Partnerships (CDP) represents a response to the slow pace of economic development, democratisation and conflict resolution in many African countries. By pooling the resources of diverse institutions with common interests, the CDP undertakes to research and make available to West African countries, and to the main regional organisation, ECOWAS, new insights into the challenges facing the region, as well as a wide range of research skills and expertise needed to achieve positive change. CDP member institutions include fourteen research centres and universities, over half of which are African institutions. The consortium thus enables individual African researchers, research institutions, institutions of civil society and regional organisations such as ECOWAS to benefit from a unique intra-regional networking that involves a research-policy nexus and provides opportunities for international interaction, while remaining principally engaged in their home countries. The year 2007 saw the first periods of fieldwork thanks to a generous grant from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Eight (08) projects were developed and effectively launched and each one of the CDP member institutions is playing an active role in at least one of the eight projects:
1. Local Governance and Decentralization
2. Access to Justice and the Rule of Law
3. Media and Voice in Democracy
4. Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness
5. Local Dynamics of Conflict and Peacebuilding
6. ECOWAS and the Regional Dynamics of Conflict & Peacebuilding
7. Financing Democracy
8. Modelling Success in Governance and Institution Building
