CODESRIA in partnership with la Guilde Africaine des Réalisateurs et Producteurs and the Pan African Film & Television Festival (FESPACO) is organizing a workshop on “‘Emergence’ on Screen and on Stage.” The organization of a workshop on the sidelines of the bi-annual Pan-Africa Film and Television Festival, FESPACO in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso has for 10 years served as an opportunity for CODESRIA and its partners to assemble scholars, artists and practitioners to discuss burning themes in African film, theater and life.
‘Emergence’ has come to dominate discussions of political economy in Africa. The idea of emergence is also integral to African film and theater as a favored leitmotif around which stories are created and performed. On screen or on stage, understood here to include that of national and international politics, the imagination and performance of ‘emergence’ raises certain questions that participants in the 2017 workshop are invited to explore. These touch on how we understand the place from which we emerge, the destination the process of emergence is supposed to take us to, and the process through which emergence is achieved. Parallels between the performance of ‘emergence’ on stage and screen on one hand and in the political sphere are also important.
Participants in the workshop include academics, filmmakers, journalists and policy makers from countries including Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Brazil, Gambia, Egypt, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, the US, France and Germany.
