Training workshops in research conducted by CODESRIA are not learning basic skills that are taught in institutions of higher education.
The CODESRIA methodological workshops were first introduced in the 1990s with several objectives in mind. The first and most important of them was to fill a growing gap in post-graduate research training occasioned by the observed dearth of competence on methods arising from the brain drain in the higher education system. Other reasons that were deemed important include the absence of opportunities for networking the postgraduate research community, a deficit of mentorship in the system of student supervision at a time of massification in the higher education system, and the erosion of inter-generational and multidisciplinary dialogues in the postgraduate research process.
Structured as research seminars, the methodological workhops are co-hosted with local universities and draw participants from different disciplinary backgrounds from a variety of countries in each of the sub-regions targeted. In addition to the direct academic benefits, the workshops offered the participants an opportunity to build their research networks and receive direct input into their on-going projects. The diversity of participants in the workshops and the continuous growth in the demand for them underscore the felt need for these methodological workshops in the social research community.
