The Institute of African Studies of the University of Ghana hereby invites applications from qualified applicants for scholarship awards in support of studies leading to the MPhil (Master of Philosophy) or PhD degrees in African Studies with a concentration on African Thought. Some of the major courses that will be covered include:
Foundations in African Thought
Contemporary Issues in African Thought
African Personalities: Life and Thought
Gender in Africa: Thought and Praxis
Great Historical Movements and African Thought
African Thought and Social Institutions

The applicant must:
hold a first degree with a minimum of Second Class Upper; applicants who have written a long essay will have an advantage. Holders of a Masters degree are also eligible, but will have to show a strong research output, if they wish to be considered for the doctorate programme.
Be a citizen of a continental African country (other than Ghana).resident on the continent
Not be above 35 years of age at the time of application.
Applicants may come from any academic background, however, a background in the Social Sciences and/or Humanities is an advantage.
The scholarship award will cover the following:
Full tuition for one year
Round trip air ticket from applicant’s home country
A stipend towards room and board

Scanned copies of all relevant transcripts and certificates
A statement of no more than 200 words summarizing applicant’s background and how it might relate to the programme
A statement of no more than 1,000 words explaining applicant’s interest in the programme, how he/she would benefit from it, and future career plans
Three reference letters which should be submitted independently of the application form to firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com
Referees are encouraged to speak to applicant’s strengths in relation to the programme and applicant’s future career goals. Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek letters from lecturers/professors who know them well and can attest to their academic/intellectual achievements and strengths. Referees should cite applicant’s full names in their reports. The applicant is responsible for ensuring that names tally with those on their application forms and transcripts/certificates.
The deadline for the receipt of ALL Materials is November 24, 2014. Applicants should ensure that documents are submitted by the deadline. Late applications will not be accepted. Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications before the deadline as reviewing is on a rolling basis.
