The African continent has, in the last few years, been besieged by crises in various forms –environmental, economic, health, social and political. Perhaps, the greatest challenge confronting the continent is the unmitigated spread of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), which, according to the World Health Organisation, has claimed over 5000 lives mainly in West Africa.
Number of visits: 635
We, at CODESRIA, are fully persuaded and convinced that the best way to address the pandemic is through a multidisciplinary approach involving healthcare professionals and researchers in various disciplines of the social sciences. This is what informed our second Round Table on EVD, on the theme: “Social Science Perspectives on Ebola" held in Dakar, on 6 November, 2014. The Round Table was moderated by Aminata Diaw Cissé of CODESRIA, and the speakers included Professor Cheikh Ibrahima Niang of Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD) and Dr Ato Kwamena Onoma of CODESRIA. The debate that followed the initial interventions was very lively, leading to far-reaching suggestions as to how to end the Ebola scourge. In this issue of the Newsletter, we are carrying a report on the Round Table that appeared in Le Soleil of Senegal.
Also in this issue is an article by Dr Yusuf Bangura titled Spectre of Ebola Protectionism, in which he draws the attention of the international community to the dangers of a new kind of protectionism that the outbreak of EVD in West Africa has provoked.
Our readers will find Dr Ndongo Samba Sylla’s commentary on the recent political upheaval in Burkina Faso which ended Blaise Compaoré’s 27-year reign and culminated in the formation of a new government very enlightening. Sylla is the editor of "Rediscovering Sankara, Martyr of the Freedom", also a must-read.
The 14th General Assembly of CODESRIA to be held in Dakar, on 8-12 June 2015 is also featured in this issue of CODESRIA Newsletter, and much more.
