On November 16, 2015 the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) signed a memorandum of understanding with the African Union Commission (AUC) with the goal of anchoring the long history of collaboration by the two institutions on research and its influence on policy making. H.E. Dr. Aisha Laraba Abdullahi, the Commissioner for Political Affairs at the African Union Commission signed on behalf of the African Union while Ebrima Sall, Executive Secretary of CODESRIA signed on behalf of the Council.
CODESRIA and the African Union share an interest in contributing to the realization of an Africa that is economically prosperous, egalitarian, democratic and rights-respecting, and can stand on an equal footing in its interactions with others in the world. The two institutions have a long history of collaboration and the MoU seeks to anchor such collaboration in an explicit institutional basis while making it more systematic. The specific areas of work covered by the MoU include democratic and good governance, human rights and transitional justice, constitutionalism and the rule of law, peacebuilding and peacemaking among others. The two institutions will proceed to the elaboration of a 3-year plan of activities that would give life and meaning to the MoU. CODESRIA hopes, through this collaboration, to give added momentum to its work on the broad issue of governance and the engagement of such work by practitioners in Africa.
The MOU was signed at the headquarters of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, in the presence of other senior officials of the AUC and CODESRIA.
