The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) organized a panel discussion on the occasion of the launch of the 2015 Global Go-To Think Tanks Index. The event was organized in collaboration with the Lauder Institute of the University of Pennsylvania, which publishes the index. It took place in the seminar room of CODESRIA’s Secretariat in Dakar from 15:00-17:00- on Wednesday January 27th , 2016 and was attended by many people from many institutions and the press.
The event started with introductory remarks from Dr Ebrima Sall, CODESRIA’s Executive Secretary who did an overview of the importance of think tank work and the challenges they face. It was followed by a brief overview of the report by Ato Onoma A panel discussion moderated by Prof. Aminata Diaw Cisse, Head of Training, Grants and Fellowships followed this. In her remarks, Pr Penda Mbow, Minister in charge of Francophonie Affairs, Republic of Senegal, talked about the importance of Think Tank in the developed countries and contrasted it with the limited engagement of Think Tanks by policy makers in African countries, even though such engagement stands to benefit African countries a lot. Dr Pascal Kambale of the Open Society Foundations , Afro Senior Program Advisor highlighted the extent of CODESRIA policy influence by invoking the example of the Council’s work on international criminal justice and encouraged the Council to make more of an effort to work with practitioners.
