The University of York, Canada will confer upon Prof. Thandika Mkandawire, former Executive Secretary of CODESRIA and Professor at London School of Economics, an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree on October 14th 2018. The honour will be in recognition of Prof. Mkandawire’s excellent record in scholarship and research in the area of development studies. The letter from the University’s President reads: “In conferring this degree, the Senate of York University wishes to recognize your scholarship and research in development studies. Your international leadership, extensive experience in policy and advocacy, published works, and demonstrated excellence as an academic, in addition to your commitment to social justice, is commendable and serves as a model worthy of emulation by our graduands.”
Prof. Mkandawire served as the third Executive Secretary of CODESRIA and his tenure saw the expansion of the Council’s programmes and funding base. The Council can attest to the attributes the President of York University in Canada cites in conferring this degree. Not only did Thandika (as he is popularly known within the community) play a critical role in building CODESRIA’s research programmes and intellectual reputation, he was equally successful in institutionalising the Council into the leading pan-African institution it is today. On behalf of CODESRIA Secretariat and the CODESRIA community in general, we congratulate Thandika for this great honour and commend him for being a worthy ambassador of the Council and the African intellectual community.
