On the 18th and 19th August 2010, the Council for Development of Social Science research in Africa (CODESRIA) and the Scholar at Risk Network (SAR) are organizing a planning meeting to gather African scholars, human rights and civil society activists together to discuss issues of Academic Freedom. The purpose of the meeting is to develop specific proposals for two-year, follow-up projects to increase understanding and respect for academic freedom and related values. The focus of the projects will be on the African region, but the intention is to produce successful models for use by academics and advocates in all regions. In time, participants from all regions will collaborate on projects aimed at the global level.
CODESRIA has a long-standing focus on academic freedom issues on the continent and has held many research conferences on the theme. Scholars at Risk is an international network of over 200 universities in 29 countries, working to promote academic freedom and to defend the human rights of scholars worldwide.
